Chord Construction
Chords are built by stacking thirds from a root note. The most basic chord, a triad, consists of three notes:
- Root (1): The foundation note that gives the chord its name
- Third (3): Determines if the chord is major (major 3rd) or minor (minor 3rd)
- Fifth (5): Adds stability and fullness to the chord
Extended chords add additional thirds: 7th, 9th, 11th, and 13th, creating more complex harmonies.
